According to Functional Medicine, improving health by reversing the root causes of disease is the way to go. However, identifying the root causes of dis-ease in your body that are causing symptoms can be time consuming and feel overwhelming. But what if you could work on improving the root causes of your dis-ease and symptoms on your own during the down times of working with your health care professional? Well you can! Your Functional Medicine health care professional will tell you that the first place to start is with diet and lifestyle factors. And the only one who can do the work to make these changes is YOU. There’s a TON of information out there about different dietary & lifestyle approaches and it can get overwhelming pretty quickly. So I’m outlining the very basics as health goals to strive for for all of us to address all the root problems. All disease states can be improved by improving our nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress levels. Here are a few basics that you can start working on now that still improve the root causes. 1. REDUCE STRESS
2. REDUCE INFLAMMATION
3. BOOST NUTRIENT DENSITY
4. TAKE STEPS TO IMPROVE SLEEP
5. EXERCISE/MOVE DAILY
HOW: Get up and move. Do things you enjoy, not what others tell you to do or what you think you SHOULD do but you won't because you hate that thing. Work at your own level and build upon that. 6. GET OUTSIDE AND GET SUN

Symptoms whether physical, cognitive or behavioral may be due to imbalances in our bodies. It's fascinating how these factors are all interconnected, don't you think? How does a body become imbalanced?Symptoms are signs that the body is out of balance. The body consists of interrelated systems that depend on each other to function optimally. When one system is out of balance, it affects the entire body. Factors such as prenatal, hereditary, and lifestyle choices, along with processed foods, sugars, additives, environmental toxins, sleep, and stress, can cause imbalances in the gut, leading to imbalances in the brain and throughout the body. It is logical to conclude that if these factors are not optimal, a child's growth and development may not be optimal either. How is balance restored?Did you know that what your child eats, how well they sleep, how they manage stress, and their environment can all impact their physical health, learning, and behavior? Physical, emotional and mental health can all improve through:
Although genetics play a role in our health, our nutrition and lifestyle choices have a greater impact. Imbalance usually starts in the gut, affecting the brain, and in turn, the rest of the body.
Improving the diet by taking out junk and replacing it with whole foods is the first step for all of us to better gut and brain health! 2/29/2024 0 Comments My Functional Health Coach StoryHello, I'm Valerie. I'm a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner & Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach supporting families with a plant-based lifestyle. I coach individuals and families working to meet dietary and lifestyle goals for improved physical, mental & spiritual health. I was raised on the SAD (Standard American Diet) and when I became a vegetarian, it was a SAD version of that. However, I didn't know better at the time. Since then, my training in functional nutrition has taught me all about the importance of food and lifestyle factors in all areas of health. I've learned about supporting health a vegetarian at heart and have worked and continue to work on educating myself and supporting others on how to eat more plant based while maintaining nutritional balance. As a parent and teacher, I understand and have lived the challenges of feeding kids healthy food and balancing lifestyle factors with real life factors. When my kids were little, I thought we ate reasonably well. We ate plenty of vegetables and not too much junk, or so I thought. I had fallen into the traps that many people fall into. Food labels and advertising claiming foods are "healthy" or organic". So much of the food we're sold is not healthy for our bodies and over time can be incredibly harmful to health. My children are grown now, and I wish I had learned earlier the truth about how food, sleep, movement, and stress can affect physical and mental health. Then, I could have influenced their lifelong habits while they were young and at home. Current science has shown that many symptoms of: allergies, acne, eczema, rashes, digestion, cognition, learning, behavior, mood, and more can be caused by and reversed by improving diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, and other environmental factors. I've seen the difference in my family and clients that even small improvements in nutrition and lifestyle can make and am grateful that I get to work with people on their quest to improve their physical, emotional and mental health naturally. Many people know they want to make changes but are overwhelmed with all the information and misinformation that is out there. The idea of making huge changes to diet and lifestyle can feel way out of the realm of possibilities. But it can be done! I've seen the difference that even small improvements in nutrition and lifestyle can make and am grateful that I get to work with people to support them on their quest to improve physical, emotional and mental health naturally. I hope you'll invite me to support you on your journey toward holistic wellness. |
